Figure Drawing and Sketchcrawl 17

I [finally] went to a figure drawing session this weekend! The model was a dancer, whom I have drawn three times previously. He had, as the woman behind me mentioned, the physique of a "Greek God." That was it, I had my focus for the night: I turned all of his poses into something that may have come out of an ancient Greek Battle.

With my art origins coming from comic books, his body was fairly easy for me to draw, a nice change.

I know its a week late, but here are my two favorite sketches from the Chinatown Sketchcrawl

China Town Sketch Crawl
A few crawlers and I decided to all sit down on some steps across from this classic Chinese architecture to sketch it. As I'm pulling out my sketchbook and brush pen, the two people next to me pull out a Clintiq wacom pad and a nintendo ds lite!! There I am, sandwiched between two people doing a digital painting. I was in complete awe at the technology! Guess I'm still old school with tangible pen and paper. Although I have been contemplating getting a nintendo ds to do digital sketches on! We'll see...

China Town Bakery
The sign above this cute little bakery really caught my attention, with all the rust and peeling paint now masking the once glamorous sign

And here is a digital rendering of an old chalk pastel piece I made for my brother. It is inspired by an acoustic song he composed "Sleepy Moon"

The Unexpected Encounter

The picnic was lovely, Thai food sitting warmly in my belly as I wandered the Botanical Gardens of San Francisco. Winding through thickets of foreign plants, all which attained the motion of seaweed when there is a disturbance in the water, I ran into the strangest creature! A towering silhouette with long limber branches slithering against its bark encased trunk. With the cool wind aggravating it into motion, I was hesitant to touch it. Tightening the grip on my date's arm I quietly stepped towards it. The tentacles didn't protest the human caress, but rather swayed slowly like legs pushing through water. This Passieflora Membranacea was a fish out of water, taken from Chapas Mexico and shipped off to the Bay Area.

First drawn in my new square sketchbook!! A gift from the holidays :)

I also learned more about my cameras settings, so hopefully my photos will show some improvement.
